History of the Mission



Bangladoot, Manila started operation in 1982:

Bangladesh Embassy started its operation in the Philippines on 18 January 1982, under Late Maj Gen Moinul Hussain Choudhury, BirBikram. 10 Ambassadors have served the Mission till date. Former President HM Ershad paid a state visit to the Philippines from 9-12 October 1989 and former President of the Philippines Fidel Valdez Ramos visited Bangladesh from 5-7 March 1997. Since the establishment of bilateral relations as many as twelve Agreements/MOUs on various fields between the two countries were signed. A number of Ministerial and Secretary level visits have also taken place over the years.


Visit of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to the Philippines :

Late President Corazon Aquino had invited Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to visit the Philippines.  During the visit of the Hon’ble Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to the Philippines from 8-10 September, 1997, they became friends.  A 40-member delegation of FBCCI accompanied her and held important discussions on matters of mutual interests. Three agreements/MOUs were signed during the visit namely, Convention for Avoidance of Double Taxation and Preservation of Fiscal Evasion, MOU for Promotion and Reciprocal Protection of Investments and an MOU between the FBCCI and the Philippines Chamber of Commerce and Industry.


Brotherly gesture :

After the devastating floods in September 1988, the Philippines government dispatched a plane load of essential medicines as a token of solidarity and friendship with Bangladesh. The same gesture showed by Bangladesh during the recent Super Typhoon Yolanda in November 2013. Bangladesh declared one million USD as cash donation and brought relief goods and medicines worth USD 165,000 for the typhoon affected people.
